Why do Tuvaluans Citizens Need the ETIAS Travel Authorization?

Tuvalu is not a part of the European Union (EU) or the Schengen Area.

The ETIAS is a travel authorization system introduced by the EU for citizens of visa-exempt third countries who plan to visit the Schengen Area, such as Tuvaluans travelers. ETIAS is designed to enhance security and conduct pre-travel checks on persons traveling to Schengen countries.

About Tuvalu travel documents

  • To apply, you will need a Tuvaluans valid travel document to which a visa may be affixed.
  • Your Tuvaluans travel document should not expire in less than three months and it should not be older than 10 years.
  • The last requirement does not apply to family members of EU citizens or those of non-EU nationals who have the right to move freely throughout the European Union.

Tuvaluans citizens with a travel document which does not comply with international standards may be rejected during the application process. It may also pose problems when a carrier verifies your travel authorisation prior to boarding. 

Required information

Tuvaluans travelers should know that when filling out the application, you will be asked to provide the following information:

  • Personal information including your name(s), surname, date and place of birth, nationality, home address, parents’ first names, email address and phone number;
  • Tuvalu travel document details;
  • Details about your level of education and current occupation in Tuvalu;
  • Details about your intended travel and stay in any of the countries requiring ETIAS;
  • Details about any criminal convictions, any past travels to war or conflict zones, and whether you have recently been subject of a decision requiring you to leave the territory of any country.

You must be in possession of a valid ETIAS travel authorisation during your entire stay in Europe territory. You’ll be notified by email when you ETIAS for Europe is approved. It is linked to the Tuvalu passport used to apply and remains valid for up to 3 years.

If a security risk is detected, the ETIAS application is reviewed manually before a decision is reached.

You will need a payment card to cover the EUR 7 official fee for each authorization. You can use a variety of online payment options to pay.

Applicants who are under 18 or above 70 years of age are exempt from pay the fee. Family members of EU citizens or third-country citizens who have the right to move freely within the European Union are also exempt from paying the fee.

You will need a payment card to cover the EUR 7 official fee + EUR 12 ETIAS Travel management services for each authorization. You can use a variety of online payment options to pay in etiastravel.eu.

Do I Need ETIAS for Travel from Tuvalu to Europe Now?

No, you do not need ETIAS to travel from Tuvalu to Europe yet. The system will be operational from 2025. Tuvaluans can currently travel to Europe without a ETIAS travel authorization.
